Below is a summary of the key areas we typically review at renewal for Home insurance policy and why they are important:

1. Property Details and Building Sum Insured

We’ll may review the details of your property to ensure that the coverage reflects its true value and specific needs, including:

  • Property type: Detached, semi-detached, flat, bungalow, etc.
  • Construction details: Type of materials used (e.g. brick, stone, timber)
  • Age of the property: Older properties are sometimes listed may require special consideration for things like electrical or plumbing systems
  • The building sum insured should reflect the full rebuild cost (not the market value), including demolition, professional fees, and debris removal.
  • Home improvements: Any renovations, extensions, or upgrades that may affect the reinstatement value of your home

Accurate property details help ensure that your sum insured is adequate and reflects the real value of your home.

2. Contents and Belongings

It’s essential to update your contents insurance to reflect changes in your personal possessions. We’ll review:

  • Value of belongings: If you’ve acquired or disposed of significant items, such as furniture, electronics, or artwork
  • Special items: High-value items (e.g. jewellery, antiques, musical instruments) that may need to be listed separately for full coverage

By keeping your contents up to date, we ensure you’re adequately protected in the event of loss or damage.

3. Theft and Security Measures

Most insurance policies have standard security conditions relating to theft, that include but are not limited to:

  • Locks, windows and patio doors
  • Intruder alarms (including whether they are monitored and maintained)
  • Ensuring security protections are in force when premises are closed

Let us know if there have been any security upgrades or if your security measures have changed in any way as failure to comply with policy conditions could affect claims.

4. Liability

Home Insurance often includes Personal Liability cover, protecting you in the event that you are held responsible for injury or damage to third parties. We may review:

  • Public Liability: For example, if someone is injured on your property
  • Employer’s Liability: If you employ staff or domestic help (e.g. cleaners, gardeners)

Ensuring adequate liability protection helps safeguard you against potential legal claims.

5. Claims History

Reviewing any claims from the previous year’s helps identify potential risk management improvements. Frequent or high-value claims may affect terms at renewal, but demonstrating proactive loss prevention measures can support favourable outcomes.

6. Insurance General Acceptance – Adverse Financial History, Health & Safety Breaches and Criminal History

Commercial insurance is subject to an ongoing fair presentation of risk and insurance contracts are subject to certain standard general acceptance criteria. It is the ongoing responsibility of the policyholder to ensure any adverse financial history, health & safety breaches and criminal history are disclosed as these are considered material facts that directly impact the insurer’s ability to accurately assess risk. Non-disclosure or misrepresentation of such information can lead to serious consequences, including the voiding of the policy, rejection of claims and legal action. Full disclosure ensures transparency, allows insurers to offer suitable terms and helps maintain the integrity of the insurance contract.
